About Tunnels to Towers... Stephen Siller was a firefighter with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), stationed at Engine 205/Ladder 118 in Staten Island. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Siller had just finished his shift at the firehouse when he heard about the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He immediately began making his way toward Manhattan to assist with the response. As he drove toward the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, it was already closed due to the growing chaos from the collapsing towers. Refusing to be stopped, Siller donned his full firefighting gear and, without hesitation, ran through the tunnel on foot to reach the scene. Despite the risks, he pushed forward, determined to help. He arrived at Ground Zero and began assisting in rescue efforts. Tragically, Stephen Siller lost his life when the South Tower collapsed, along with nearly 3,000 others.  Stephen Siller’s heroism and sacrifice have become a symbol of bravery and selflessness. To honor his memory, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation was founded in 2002. The foundation supports first responders, military veterans, and their families, and it also helps build smart homes for veterans with catastrophic injuries. Each year, the foundation hosts the Tunnel to Towers Run, a tribute to Stephen's legacy and to the heroes who lost their lives on 9/11. Stephen’s story remains one of extraordinary courage, and his legacy continues to inspire acts of service and dedication to others.
