How To Understand Honda Dashboard Features

Your Honda is trying to communicate with you if the warning lights go on in your dashboard. Unfortunately, it can be somewhat confusing to look at the dashboard and try to figure out what all the bells, whistles, and lights mean.

Could you use a few tips as to how to better understand Honda dashboard features? If so, we're here to help. Without the aid of pictures, we are going to run through the meanings and symbols common to many Honda dashboards.

Keep in mind that with these warning lights, you're being warned for a reason. In most cases you should have a certified Honda mechanic check out the problem.

Light for the Airbag

What does it look like? A seated person with an airbag facing them that's been deployed.

What does it mean? There is some kind of malfunction going on with your supplemental restraint system. The airbag might not deploy in the event of a collision.

Light For the Seatbelt

Appearance? A seat belted person.

Meaning? Seatbelts need to be buckled by the front row occupants. You may hear an audible warning bell if you ignore the light and exceed 15 mph.

Light for Gas

Appearance? A little gas pump.

Meaning? It's time to fill up because you're going to run out of gas soon. Then again, your fuel system’s pressure may be too low, as well. This could be caused by a leak or a loose gas cap.

The Light for Tire Pressure

Appearance? An exclamation mark in the middle of a flat tire (yellow).

Meaning? A drop in pressure has been experienced by one or more of your tires. Check the tire pressure as soon as possible.

Coolant

Appearance? With the temperature gauge in the middle, two wavy lines are stacked.

Meaning? The coolant level has decreased or attention needs to be given to the temperature gauge.

ESP or ESC

Appearance? Two wavy skid marks behind a vehicle.

Meaning? The ESC will not mitigate when this light is on and if your vehicle loses control. The ESP or ESC has been deactivated.

AdBlue/DEF indicator

Appearance? Two rows of vertical dots over a horizontal funnel.

Meaning? It's time to drop off DEF (diesel exhaust fuel) if this light comes on and you drive a vehicle that takes diesel fuel.

Glow Plug

What does this light look like? A coil that's yellow.

Meaning? The process of your vehicle’s cylinders being heated is taking place when this light is on.

Check Engine

What does this light look like? A small engine.

Meaning? Any number of things can be represented by this light. Check with a certified mechanic immediately.

Brake Wear

Appearance: A dotted line on either side of a circle.

Meaning: The brake rotors or brake pads should be replaced.

Battery

Appearance? A minus and plus sign on a little battery.

Meaning? Correct battery charging is not occurring.

The Light for the Steering Wheel

Appearance? An exclamation point next to a steering wheel.

Meaning? The electric power steering is not working properly if this light is on.

Light for ABS

Appearance? One curved line on either side of a circle with ABS in the middle.

Meaning? You can still stop or slow down your vehicle, but deactivation has occurred with your anti-lock brake system.
