How To Change Honda Headlights

If you try to do your own work on your vehicle whenever possible, you may be wondering how to change Honda headlights. Here, we’ll go over the steps involved. If you have trouble, you can always call Honda of Staten Island and set up an appointment. We'll be happy to help you care for your Honda.

Below, we are going to go over the steps involved in changing Honda headlights for a Civic. Why a Civic? In America, one of the top three best selling cars is the Honda Civic. Over 12 million units have been sold in just the past five decades, in fact.

How to Change Headlights

Hopefully, you know how to raise the hood of your car. If not, check the owner's manual, then raise the hood:

  • Pull out the power steering reservoir. This way you'll have headlight bulb access on the driver’s side. To access the bulb on the passenger side, however, loosen the battery retaining bracket or remove the car battery.
  • Hopefully, now you have headlight bulb access. Attached to the bulb, you'll find an electric connector. Squeeze both sides of the tab to disengage the connector, then remove it.
  • At the back of the headlight assembly, you'll find a rubber weather seal. By pulling the tab, remove the seal.
  • You should now have visibility to a wire. It secures the bulb. By pushing it away, you can unclasp it to get to the bulb.
  • The old bulb can be taken out and a new one can replace it now. (To find out the kind of bulb required, check your owner’s manual.)
  • To put everything back into place, reverse the order you went through above.
  • You can start the car after you close the hood. To test the bulb, turn on the headlights.

Is Your Headlight Failing?

Other than your headlight going out completely and refusing to work, here are some signs that your headlight may be on its way out:

  • High beams work but low beams don't
  • Your fuses are constantly blowing (bulbs are constantly burning out)
  • Your headlights are dim
  • Your headlights are flickering

Driving Without Headlights

Is it safe to drive without one headlight if the other one works? Technically, the answer is "not exactly". What's more, a police officer can ticket you for driving around with one headlight or no working headlights. They may give you time to repair the car and, thereby, erase the ticket. But you never know. Best case scenario, when you notice that a headlight is going or it's already out, get it replaced at your local Honda dealer (if you don't feel comfortable replacing it yourself).

What's more, if your headlight covers are cloudy, yellow, etc., you'll eventually want to have those replaced as well. You'll find your headlights offer higher-quality illumination with clear, clean lenses/coverings.
