How To Turn Off Honda Passenger Airbag

You may be asking, "Why would anyone want to deactivate an airbag?" Actually, the front passenger seat airbag of your Honda should be deactivated before you install a baby seat. Infant safety can only be ensured if the passenger safety system for the airbag is inactive.

Here, we'll discuss how to turn off the Honda passenger airbag. Please keep in mind that because models and year of manufacture cause differences between any vehicles, the actual steps you will take may differ slightly. This is a basic guide to help you along.

Note: Not all automobiles allow you to disable airbags.

Airbag Button

To deactivate the passenger side airbag in your Honda automobile, the airbag button must first be located. Remember, different vehicles will vary slightly from one another.

The device for unlocking and locking airbags in many cases is in the glove compartment or on the side of the door close to the glove box. In some models it is at about knee level to the left of the steering wheel.

Here's how you know you have found the right button: It will say "Passenger Airbag" or "Airbag" on it. There should also be "off" and "on" settings.

If you have trouble finding the deactivation button, please check with your owner's manual. The shut off for the passenger side airbag may be referred to as PACOS (passenger airbag cut off switch). Additionally, you may need to insert a special key to turn the switch.

When Should Deactivation Occur?

Before installing a baby car seat, it is necessary to disengage the passenger side airbag. To give yourself room to work, don't install the car seat until you are done locating and working with the shut off. Additionally, do not have the key in the ignition, don't have it in the “on” position. The engine should be off.

Turning the Switch Off

The switch for the passenger airbag is in the “on” position by default. You may need to turn the key up a notch in the ignition to disable the airbag. It should be put into the "off" position for disabling.

Is the Bag Disabled?

How do you know whether or not you have succeeded in disabling the passenger airbag in your Honda?

Turn the engine on in your vehicle. A message should inform you that you changed the status of the airbag to deactivated. You should see a lit warning light for the passenger airbag.
