How To Reset Your Honda Airbag Module

One important safety device in your vehicle is your airbag module. It makes sure your vehicle’s airbag functions properly. During a crash, your airbag may not deploy if the module is not functioning appropriately. On your vehicle's dashboard, you may notice an illumination of the airbag module warning light if there is a malfunction. A qualified mechanic should check out the airbag assembly. However, the airbag module unit and warning light can be reset on your own once that's done.

Here, we'll offer a little guidance as to how to reset your Honda airbag module. Please keep in mind that models may differ, as well as the year they were produced. This means that there could be variations in the methodology offered below. This should be a relatively basic guide, however, to help you along. If you run into trouble, the Honda of Staten Island technicians will be happy to assist you.

Lift the Hood

Once the hood is up and propped open, look on the end of the cable wire cable clamp – negative – for a retaining nut. Loosen that nut with a socket set. Once it has been loosened, the negative battery terminal cable clamp can be slid off.

Wait a Second

Before reconnecting the battery terminal, it's best to wait approximately five seconds or so. Using the socket wrench, the retaining nut can then be tightened again. The reset of your airbag module should be complete once the power is restored.

Verification

How do you know if the module has been reset? You can verify this by turning the key in the ignition to the “II” position. You should not notice any illumination of the airbag light.

Miscellaneous

If your vehicle works with fault codes rather than warning lights, the same procedure can be followed and should reset the fault code just like it would for the warning light.

Keep in mind that any time an airbag is deployed, the system has to be reset. This should be done by a professional.

What do airbag warning lights mean? These indicate there could be a problem with the computer, airbag sensors, wiring, or the airbags themselves.

In an accident, your airbags will not deploy if the airbag light is on. That's why it's crucial you get to the bottom of what is causing the warning light to be on in the first place. Have the situation remedied, and then have the system reset. Airbags save lives.
