How To Replace Your Honda Key Battery

All over the nation, people with key fobs still use the key to manually unlock and lock their vehicle. Why? When they press the buttons, nothing happens. What they may not realize is that your key fob works on a battery. If the battery goes dead, just like anything else that's battery-operated, it stops working.

So, is it possible to change out a Honda key battery? Yes, it is. We're going to offer a bit of information as to how that can be done and when. Even if you don't know your way around a lot of tools and hardware, you should still be able to successfully handle a fob battery change.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this, however, you can always talk to your local Honda of Staten Island dealer. We'd be happy to help.

What You'll Need

  • The appropriate battery. Check your owner’s manual for the correct type of battery or do an online search.
  • A screwdriver that has a flat top and is relatively small

Steps To a Key Fob Battery Change

Though it may not be easy to locate, there is a notch you'll need to find for this process to work. This is the trickiest step. At the top, there's a small gap on some units. You may have to closely look at the point of connection where your key exits the fob on others.

Pop open the fob using the flat tip screwdriver by wedging it open at the slot. Down the middle, in half, the unit should split. Inside, you'll find a round battery.

If you haven't already done so, the battery type now needs to be identified. The model of the battery may be revealed by markings on the one you're taking out. The same kind of battery should be purchased to refresh and revitalize your key fob.

Put the new battery in where the old battery was. With your finger, you should have been able to pop out the old battery easily. Exactly where the old one sat, that's where the new battery will slide in.

The fob can now be snapped shut. When you squeeze it, it should click into place.

Does Your Key Fob Battery Need Changing?

Generally speaking, you should get five years out of the battery in your key fob. This of course depends on how often you use it. Some signs that your battery may be going dead are as follows:

  • You have to press the buttons several times for the locks to respond. This makes for an unreliable, inconsistent key fob.
  • You press the buttons, but nothing happens – ever. The vehicle no longer responds to your efforts with the key fob. No signal is being given out.
