How To Replace A Honda Car Battery

If you have the right kind of tools, and enough know-how to get the job done right, you may want to attempt a few of your own repairs on your automobile. Something as simple as changing out a battery isn't that big of a job. Fuel pumps, brakes, alternators, etc. are best left to the professionals. On a Honda, everything has been manufactured precisely. Everything fits with everything in a certain manner. It is a high-tech, high-efficiency machine. If you don't trust yourself working with something as crucial as the engine in your Honda, bring it to a certified Honda mechanic.

That said, let's take a look at how to replace a Honda car battery. Please keep in mind that the following instructions are very general and may not apply specifically to each and every make and model of automobile.

Jumping

If you have tried to jump your battery and it still won't start, there can be little doubt that you likely need to replace it. You might be able to jump it and drive around for a while to charge it, thereby solving the problem. If your battery won't hold a charge, or charge at all, it needs to be replaced.

Steps to Changing a Battery

It's best to wear gloves and safety goggles when you're working with the battery of an automobile.

  • Locate your car’s battery.
  • Find the negative and positive terminals. (Positive is usually stamped with a plus sign and/or has a red cover. A minus sign should be on the negative/black.)
  • On the negative or black terminal, loosen the nut with a socket wrench.
  • From the battery, you can now remove the negative terminal.
  • With the positive or red terminal, repeat the process.
  • The clamps that hold the battery in place will now need to be removed. Check carefully because there may be several. (You can probably use a socket extension for this.)
  • You can remove the battery from its tray once you set aside the fasteners and clamps.
  • Make sure that both ends of the battery are never touched with a metal object at the same time!
  • Corrosion will be indicated on the terminals by a greenish residue. With baking soda and water, and a wire brush, these should be cleaned. Make sure that everything is completely dry before continuing.
  • From the ends of the posts, the black and red plastic covers should be removed before replacing the battery.
  • On both battery posts, you may want to install anti-corrosion washers. You may also wish to use a corrosion resistant gel or anti-corrosion solution on the terminals.
  • In the battery tray, you can now place the new battery, aligning the negative and positive ends of the battery with the terminals that match.
  • In the same way you removed them, reinstall the clamps to secure the battery.

Time to Reconnect

Here's how to connect your new battery:

  • The positive terminal should be connected first. To the positive battery post, attach the positive/red terminal.
  • With the negative/black terminal, repeat the process.
  • To ensure both ends are secure and connected, try to move the battery around. Check all clamps if the battery shifts. Check cable tightness as well.
  • Reinstall the cover if the battery was originally covered.
  • The hood of the car can now be closed and you can fire up your engine.
