For those who love projects and working on cars, however, here's how to change the oil in a Honda Civic.

Changing Your Oil

To about "operating temperature", warm up the engine. This way, old oil engine contaminants will be better suspended.

You'll likely want to jack up the front of your car. Do this safely and place it on jack stands. The parking brake should be set when you jack up your car. Leave enough room underneath so you feel comfortable working:

  • At the top of the engine, remove the oil cap. This helps with draining.
  • Nearer the engine than the transmission, underneath the car, there is an oil drain plug (7 mm hex). Under this plug, place the oil pan.
  • Loosen the plug with a three-quarter turn. By hand, remove the plug and allow draining oil to run into the pan.
  • With a clean rag, wipe off the plug while the oil drains. The former drain plug gasket should then be removed.
  • Onto the oil drain plug, place your new gasket. Make sure that, around the threads of the plug, it fits correctly. Once the oil is just dripping, take a clean rag and wipe off the area around the plug.
  • To the threads of the oil drain plug, apply a light coat of new oil. This helps with sealing.
  • Reinstall the oil drain plug using the wrench you used before. It should fit snugly when tightened. The car can now be lowered.
  • By rotating it clockwise, remove the old oil filter using a filter wrench.
  • Take the new oil filter and, around the threads and rubber ring, apply a light coat of new oil.
  • So that it's a snug fit, install the new oil filter and tighten it.
  • The oil cap should be removed (top of engine) if you didn’t earlier.
  • Into the hole, insert a funnel. Into the funnel, pour 5W-30 engine oil (about 4 quarts).
  • You may want to check your owner's manual for the suggested oil weight and whether or not it should be synthetic.
  • To determine your engine’s oil level, check the dipstick. Replace the oil cap when done.
  • A recycling facility should be able to take care of your old oil filter and oil. Some repair shops and parts stores also accept them.
