How To Change Honda Door Panels

Nothing lasts forever. Not even on a Honda! If your door panels have been scuffed, scratched, and dented, you may decide to change them out. Whereas, the procedure will differ a bit with each make and model, there are some generalities that do apply.

For the avid do-it-yourselfers out there, we are going to offer a few tips as to how to change Honda door panels. Keep in mind, once again, that these steps and procedures can differ from car to car. This is for general knowledge only.

What's more, you may be able to go on YouTube and find a helpful video. YouTube is full of "How-to Videos". Remember, it may be better to trust a job like this to a professional auto technician if you're not handy, don't have the right tools, etc.

You'll Need Some Tools

Here are some of the tools you may need for the job:

  • Tack hammer
  • Sandpaper
  • Rag
  • Scrap piece of wood – 2" x 2" should suffice
  • Mallet
  • Pry bar

Step-By-Step Instructions

  • First, the door will need to be removed from the car. The top hinge should first be unscrewed, then the lower hinge removed, while somebody holds onto the door for you. So you can work on the panel, place the door on a flat surface.
  • Use a small pry bar in the corner of the panel to remove fasteners. Carefully bang out the corner with a rubber mallet. To separate it from the joint, tap against the frame of the panel with a scrap of wood. Set aside the frame piece you removed.

Steps 3, 4, and 5

  • Step three: Out of the channel grooves, slide the panel. While you have access to it, clean out and inspect the groove. Use some high grit sandpaper and a rag.
  • Step four: The new door panel can now be inserted. Use staples or wood glue to hold it in place. To make a decision as to which to use, consider what was used to attach the original panel.
  • Step five: The bottom of the frame tacking can now be reattached to the door. Use a tack hammer.
